Croatian elementary school for local population in Liganj

Croatian elementary school for local population in Liganj was built and opened in 1914th, with the means that was provided from the Society of St. Cyril and Methodius of Istria that is a cultural and educational associations that lift and upkeep schools in the Croatian region of Istria.

With the opening of school in their native language, efforts were made to prevent the denationalization of the local population which was increasingly threatened from Italian aggressive irredentism. School was built according to the design of Opatija builder Ivan Franković. On the ground floor was the classroom, locker room and sanitary rooms. Upstairs was a residential area which was linked to the ground floor by internal staircase. The Secretary of the Congregation, during the construction and at the opening of the school was Viktor Car Emin (1870th to 1963rd). It was a teacher, journalist and writer, native from Lovran where he lived his childhood. Shortly after the opening of the school it took place the annual meeting of the Society of St. Cyril and Methodius of Istria.The first Croatian school teacher in Liganj was Stjepan Dukić. The school was attended by children from Liganj and the surrounding area: Dobreć, Lovranska draga, Oprič and Tuliševica. After the end of World War I. the school closed and during the Italian authorities in the area the scool acted as an Italian kindergarten.

Today it houses the rooms of the community hous, local collection of Lovranšćina, Directorate of the Nature Park "Učka", a store and an apartment.
