The Town Tower

The Town Tower

The town tower, with its rectangular design, located on the approach to the main town square – St. George's Square, used to stand by the north entrance to the old town, that is, next to the main land-facing town gate.

This imposing building is the remnant of a former system of fortifications, and is the only tower preserved in Lovran today. However, the present tower has not been preserved entirely in its original form. The lower part is built of carved Gothic stone blocks, while the upper part, most probably destroyed during the devastation of the Uskok War (1615-1618), was added in the 17th century rather quickly (probably because of the circumstances of war) with lower quality stone. In the added section one can notice a square window frame, Renaissance pear shaped loopholes, and two consoles which protrude onto St. George's Square. Next to the tower there used to be an old school building, which was later demolished. Today the town tower functions as an attractive exhibition space, and from the top there is a pretty view of the Old Town, the main road and the open sea.

Trivia

Although it was built to defend the city, and protect people and their property, in the 19th century, from 1830 to 1870, the tower was used as a prison.
